Description
Xanthan Gum is a premium-quality, naturally derived polysaccharide produced through the fermentation of plant-based sugars using Xanthomonas campestris bacteria. Widely used in cosmetics, personal care, and food formulations, it acts as an excellent thickener, stabilizer, and suspending agent. Known for its ability to create smooth, uniform textures, it enhances viscosity, prevents ingredient separation, and improves overall formulation stability. Its versatility makes it suitable for gels, serums, creams, shampoos, body washes, and various food preparations.
Benefits
Natural viscosity enhancer and thickener
Stabilizes emulsions and prevents oil–water separation
Suspends actives, beads, and particles evenly
Improves texture, spreadability, and product consistency
Enhances foam volume in surfactant-based products
Provides smooth, cushioned skin feel
Increases formulation stability and shelf life
Uses
Face serums, gels, lotions, moisturizers
Shampoos, conditioners, hair gels
Body washes, cleansers & shower gels
Toners and makeup removers
Creams and emulsions needing improved viscosity
Food applications: sauces, syrups, beverages, dressings
Application
Thickening agent for water-based formulations
Gelling agent in clear and semi-clear products
Emulsion stabilizer in creams and lotions
Foam enhancer in surfactant-heavy formulas
Suspension aid for powders, exfoliants, and actives
Solubility
Soluble in: Cold and warm water
Insoluble in: Oils
pH Value
Works best in pH 6 – 8
Stable across a wide pH range
Usage Rate
Typical use level: 0.5% – 2%
0.3–0.5% for mild thickening
1–2% for gel creation and higher viscosity
How It Works
Forms a polymer network that increases viscosity
Binds water to prevent ingredient separation
Stabilizes emulsions by thickening the water phase
Creates smooth, gel-like textures
Suspends particles without letting them settle
Enhances product flow, slip, and sensory feel
How to Add to Formulation
Pre-disperse in glycerin, propylene glycol, or butylene glycol for lump-free hydration
Slowly sprinkle into water under constant stirring
Dissolves in cold or warm water (warmer water speeds hydration)
Add to water phase before emulsification
Add up to 0.5% salt if additional thickening is desired
Hydrate completely before adding oils or surfactants
Storage & Shelf Life
Store in a cool, dry, dark place away from humidity
Keep container sealed tightly to prevent moisture absorption
Shelf life: Minimum 2 years when stored properly
Additional Notes
Naturally biodegradable and derived from plant sugars
Works well as a standalone gelling agent in clear formulations
Ideal alternative to synthetic thickeners
Cosmetic-grade xanthan gum offers superior texture and clarity
Can cause slight “soaping effect” in some emulsions (normal and harmless)
